Best 3 Vegan Wines and Recipe Pairings
By guest blogger Elena of VegeVega.com
Great, you have made the decision, or you are thinking of going vegan! But here comes the
but…can you still drink wine?! ( I mean I personally can’t live without it ). Thankfully, the answer is – YES!!
In this article, you will find the Best 3 vegan wines I’m recommending with fantastic vegan food pairings.
But first thing first…
What Is Vegan Wine & Why Aren’t All Wines Vegan?
Many wine drinkers prefer to have a wine that is clear rather than hazy, and in order to achieve that finish, the wine requires a clarification process called fining. Unfortunately, some of the more common fining agents are derived from animal byproducts. Vegan wine is fined or clarified using a non-animal-based fining agent (such as clay or pea protein) or has been allowed to self-clarify over a longer period of time. Vegan wine is also produced without using any other animal byproduct ingredients
How to Identify Vegan Wines
Natural Merchants’ wines clearly state Certified Vegan or Vegan Friendly on the back labels. 100% are either certified vegan now, or in process of certification by one of the many worldwide vegan certification agencies. Certified Vegan organic wine brands include:
Pizzolato Italian Organic Wines
Inkarri Organic/Biodynamic Argentinian Wines
Koyle Organic/Biodynamic Chilean Wines
Bodegas Matarromera Granza Spanish Organic Wines, and
Sofos Organic Greek Wines are all Certified Vegan by the Vegan Society.
Bodegas Iranzo – makers of Spartico, Azule de Bobal and Tarantas Wines are certified Vegan by European Vegetarian Union.
Maison Raymond – French Organic Wines including Les Hauts de Lagarde are Certified Vegan with Eve Vegan.
Now, let us walk you through my favorite 3 Vegan wines and foods to pair them with.
1) Les Hauts de Lagarde Bordeaux Blanc
Tasting Notes:
Les Hauts de Lagarde Bordeaux Blanc is a beautiful blend of 60% Sauvigon Blanc and 40% Sémillon. The style is fresh, tangy and fruity with a great palate of aromas and flavors such as citrus fruits, white flowers and a touch of grapefruit. The finish is vivid and clean.
Best Food To Pair It With:
With some delicious zingy pasta! This Creamy, Avocado and Lime Pasta is made in 10 minutes. Perfect for when you are tired after work and you want to sit down with a glass of Les Hauts de Lagarde Blanc and a delicious healthy dinner.
2) Koyle Gran Reserva Carmenere
Tasting Notes:
Koyle Gran Reserva Carmenere was bottled with 13.5% alcohol and good acidity, showcasing the new style of fresher Carmenere with less ripeness and alcohol than in the past. In fact, this is very drinkable. It was fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in oak barrels for 14 months. It has a fresh nose of herbs and spices but it’s not green. There is also a meaty note here. It’s medium-bodied and easy to understand, with a tender texture and very fine tannins.
Best Food To Pair It With:
Because this wine has got some meaty taste in it, we suggest you pair it with a Vegan Seitan Steak!
3) Pizzolato Chianti
Tasting Notes:
Pizzolato Chianti is a beautiful ruby color. It has aromas of mixed berry fruit leather, strawberry, potters clay, rosehip jam, and roasted mushrooms with a crisp, dryish full body and a medium-long black pepper and caramelized squash finish. A tasty and balanced Chianti with great table-appeal.
Best Food To Pair It With:
We recommend you pair it with a delicious vegan dessert. Because the wine is fruity and light, we recommend you pair it with a super-chocolatey raw vegan brownie for a perfect balance of heaviness.
