The grapes grown in the G2 block, from high density vines plantation in Los Lingues, coming from a basalt rock slopes, where the roots fight to absorb the minerality and freshness of this volcanic basaltic rock soil. The vineyards are in the North East part of our mountains, and soils have a high concentration of iron who develope an elegant and rare expression of this blend. Plantation going to up 8.000 vines per hectare, with almost no irrigation, to express the place as much as possible
- Vinification:
At optimum ripeness late March, the grapes are hand-picked and brought to the cellar for sorting. Vinification is conducted in small tanks only with pigeage and after aging in barrels.
No filtration.- Terroir:
Well-drained soils have a clay texture with volcanic rocks and colluvial stones that deliver unique minerals giving the right balance to this wine. Both are key factors of optimal terroir for the production of high quality red wines
- Training system:
Double Guyot
- Tasting Notes:
-
A medium-bodied red with aromas of brambleberries, white pepper, five spice, pine cone and green peppercorn. Fresh and pure with fine tannins and bright acidity.
James Suckling (2019 vintage)The 2018 Cerro Basalto Cuartel G2 comes from their basalt hill, specifically from the plot they call G2, and it's very different from the Mediterranean blend Cerro Basa Ito, as this is exclusively Carmenere and Cabernet Franc (in a proportion of 82/18). They changed the vinification of this wine from 2017 when they started maturing the wine in a 3,000-liter oak foudre, and the result is a wine with a lot less influence from the oak. The vines are planted at 9,000 plants per hectare, and the plants yield no more than 500 grams of grapes, so they ripen very early while keeping very good freshness. The result is a very aromatic expression of the Carmenere, with lots of freshly cracked peppercorn and green coffee aromas, and the acidity makes it very long on the palate. It's tasty and vibrant and extremely balanced. 4,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2019.
Robert Parker - The Wine AdvocateBasalto G2 shows a bright violet color. It has pure and clean aromas, with a touch of complexity from the spiciness and graphite notes. On the palate, it is fresh and balanced. The tannins are silky and velvety, with a long, juicy and mineral finish that is influenced by the basaltic rock.
