Celebrate International Cabernet Day with Organic Cabernet Wines
We’re celebrating International Cabernet Day with a host of organic Cabernet wines from across the globe! International Cabernet Day is celebrated the Thursday before Labor Day each year, paying homage to one of the most respected and widely grown grape varieties in the world. Cabernet Sauvignon’s reputation as a consistent, reliable and multi-faceted red variety has made it a favorite new and old world variety.
Cabernet Sauvignon originated in Bordeaux and remains an important blending grape in the region. Cabernet-dominant Bordeaux blends became known as the best wines in France, and therefor the world, in the mid-nineteenth century. As a result of its popularity, the vine was brought to all corners of the world for experimentation. The Cabernet Sauvignon vine took to a wide variety of conditions and geographic locations, becoming one of the most successful “traveling vines” of the oenological world.
As a late blooming variety, Cabernet Sauvignon does best in warmer climates that do not see a harsh winter, requiring plenty of heat and sunshine to be able to fully ripen. Napa, CA embraced Cabernet Sauvignon, with “Napa Cab” being one of the most prevalent and well recognized wines in the world. But the variety also continues to thrive in European and South American climates as well, including locations such as Bordeaux, Italy, Greece and Chile, where we have found some of the most unique organic Cabernet varieties.
Characteristic aromas of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape includes cool climate traits of black cherry, mint, eucalyptus and bell pepper: while warmer climates and oak aging bring dark chocolate, cedar, vanilla and tobacco. Warm climate Cabernet Sauvignon lends to fruit forward wines, while cooler climate wines have a balanced and layered depth of flavors that mimic the nose. Cabernet Sauvignon ages well due to its high tannins, paired with medium to high acidity.
Organic Cabernet Wines from Across the Globe
Vignobles Raymond La Joly – Wine Enthusiast 91 Points
This beautiful Bordeaux blend is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Malbec. Coming from the Right Bank of Bordeaux, it’s unusual to have a Cabernet-dominant blend, but winemaker Lionel Raymond has an affinity for the luscious variety, as well as a vineyard plot that dates back many decades. The wine is produced from a parcel of 50-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon, and is vinified and aged in large 400 liters new French oak barrels. The resulting wine has a delicate, lace-like quality over complex aromas of black fruit.
Pizzolato No Sulfites Added Cabernet
On the opposite end of the aging spectrum, this young, surprisingly fruit-full wine has no sulfites added, and is vinified only in steel tanks. As exposure to oxygen can cause instability in a wine without added sulfites, every aspect of the wine’s production from harvest to bottling, must be done in the most hygienic conditions, and the wine sees no oak aging. The wine has aromas of roasted green pepper, toffee, and craisin chutney with a supple, dryish medium body and a tangy pomegranate, black pepper finish. This wine is available at Whole Foods & 365 by Whole Foods nationwide.
Koyle Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon – James Suckling 92 Points
One of the newest entries to our portfolio, this certified Biodynamic wine from the Colchagua Valley of Chile is made of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with Tempranillo, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The wine is grown in soil with a matrix of rocks and fragmented alterites. Mineral notes are expressed because of the balanced extraction through the deep roots. The wine is subtle and elegant, dominated by herbs and spices and a refreshingly mineral back bone with a very long finish.
Inkarri Estate Bottled Cabernet
Certified Biodynamic Grapes from the Nuna Vineyard, in, Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza, at an altitude of 960 m. Soil is mostly loam, with sandy loam spots of 100 cm and deeper. Calcium carbonate covered with gravel in some areas. Aromas of roasted red pepper and sweet red fruit with vanilla, chocolate and spice. Full bodied with very soft tannins.
Spartico – 50-50 Cabernet and Tempranillo
This no sulfites added wine comes from the Valencia DO of Spain. “Granulated berry and plum aromas are slightly reduced and come with an animal note on this Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon blend. A flush, weighty palate is well balanced, while flavors of dark plum and cassis finish tannic and a bit rubbery.” Wine Enthusiast Best Buy
