Grupo Matarromera president Carlos Moro from our wonderful Spanish organic winery partner Bodegas Matarromera, was recently awarded the National Innovation Award at the Spanish National Innovation and Design Awards – the highest awards for innovation in Spain.
The award recognizes entrepreneurs and key industry figures who have innovated in their chosen profession for at least 10 years. The award was presented by King Felipe of Spain in a ceremony at the Museo Arqueológico Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid.
This award was given to Moro for his overall innovation, including sustainability initiatives and a much wider approach. Throughout Moro’s career, he has always been committed to innovation, introducing ground-breaking processes and products in the agricultural sector while respecting the environment, increasing sustainability and using R&D as a strategic key to competitiveness.
Putting the focus on environmental sustainability, this award recognizes Matarromera’s innovations such as the design and performance of positive energy Emina and Granza wineries that generate more energy than they use via biomass boilers and a eco efficient design of the facilities; the creation of alternative uses to the grape pomace such as their cosmetics line Esdor and haute cuisine ingredients Vinesenti; and many of their R&D projects such as Cenit Demeter of Life Haprowine. Matarromera has also been an active member of the Wineries for Climate Protection committee. Their Granza Verdejo label is very connected to the Cenit Demeter project, where the effects of the climate change were studied on several varietals, including Matarromera’s review of the Verdejo grape.
This award acknowledges innovation as a key factor to increase competition, economic performance of the companies and life quality of the citizens. The purpose of this award is encouraging innovation in Spain, both in companies and in society. Carlos Moro has bet on innovation since the very beginning as the key in his company development and the core of his company growth strategy. This award is an incentive to keep innovation high on the list of priorities for Matarromera, as an integral part of what they are and what they strive to be.
“This award is a great honor. It’s a recognition to small and medium-sized companies` efforts towards development and innovation, and encourages us to double the efforts in our commitment for research, development and innovation (R&D&I),” said Moro.
Natural Merchants, Inc. partnered with Matarromera in 2016 to produce organically grown Granza wines – a Verdejo from Rueda and Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero. The wines are currently available for distribution nationwide.
